saying that sampling is vital to hip hop is like saying that heavy guitars and drums etc. are "vital" to rock. This reminds me of a quote from Bill Bruford (paraphrased): Americans think that the English were "destroying" rock and roll by "being creative"....but the English weren't bound by preconceived notions about what rock MUST be. Why are people in the hip hop community bound by the very same notions? Why MUST hip hop be done with samplers? This stifles creativity.

i dont mean vital like hip hop needs to have sampling, i shouldnt've have really used that word cuz i didnt mean it like that, i meant that sampling is heavy in hip hop becasue it was used in its beginning. Go back to the start of hip hop, all you had was your record, turn tables, mic, and 1 adaway sample, and from their thats how it was used and the art of sampling continued from there... Sampling something does not mean it takes away from creativity at all, at least in hip hops case

You raise a philosophical question: would hip hop exist if sampling didn't? We can imagine people with "hip hop" ideas early on, and no sampling (unless the two are symbiotic). Similarly, we can imagine "rock n' roll" people early on with no electric guitars. What, we may ask, is *essential* to any "type" of music? If it's arbitrary, it's not essential. Electric guitars and sampling seem arbitrary, and are therefore not essential to rock or hip hop. Question: so what IS essential to hip hop?

i mean sure, hip hop would exist if sampling didnt happen, hip hop started out with 3 guys in a cipher, south bronx, on the street corner. When it came to cutting and scratching, records were used and the art of sampling lived on. I mean, idk, it was just something that kinda stuck. Hip hop is expression, its emotion, its taking your knowledge of good and bad and expressing it through rhythmatic poetry which is rapping. Even going back to the blues and reggae.
